Here are some ways in which educators have used AppleWorks to help them integrate technology into their curriculum. With these ideas, your students will have fun learning and you'll be able to spend more time teaching instead of preparing lesson plans.


Oregon Trail Map
This huge map of the U.S.A. allows kids to create a graphic journal of their experiences as they travel the virtual Oregon Trail. The kids can add text under the pictures they select to complete the description of their pictorial journal. 5

Creating Linked Documents
This step-by-step instruction sheet shows how to easily link documents so that multiple ideas can be joined to create a larger new concept. 5

Word Art
This is an interdisciplinary project that incorporates art, science and language arts skills. Students create "Word Art". You can download a step card detailing the creation of the project. 8

Colonial Business Cards
Intended for third graders in a colonial studies unit. Students research the different occupations of the colonial citizens. The students then pick an occupation, a colony and a motto to go with that occupation. They create a database, enter a record of four occupations, design a new layout and eventually pick the one card they want to print off.8

Links Within Documents
Creating documents that have hyperlinks within them is easy to do with AppleWorks 5 or 6. This step-by-step instruction sheet shows how to use bookmarks and anchors. 5

Astronomy Worksheet
Educator Sherry Johnston created this astronomy worksheet to visually show students how much they weigh on different planets. As they enter their weights into the spreadsheet, students will automatically see a bar graph appear! This activity teaches students to use the Internet as a research tool. There's even a link within the document that links to "Your Weight on Other Worlds" web site.7
