The Curriculum Center

Theme of the Month:

The 50 States Our theme, "The 50 States of the United States" is related to the earlier themes "Celebrate America!" and "United States Presidents & the Presidency." If you are looking for additional information about the United States, don't forget to check these other themes.

This curricular theme should be especially useful to educators because students throughout the United States study the states of the United States in several grade levels. Most school systems focus upon their own state history, symbols, geography, resources, and culture sometime during the elementary school years, usually between grades 3 and 5. Much of the content such as state symbols, maps and pictures, and children's sections in the site links is appropriate for these grade levels. The information on government, economics, legalities, etc. is better used with older students, perhaps with studies of United States history, geography, economics, political science, and contemporary issues classes Grades 7-12.

We've included: (1) sites with data bases of information on all the states; (2) sites that are state-specific; and (3) other sites that focus upon region or specific themes. Use of these sites depends upon what you are covering with your students. The lists of sites and activities should serve as a springboard for you to take off from our information and mold it to fit your classes. We realize that there are other state sites that will be useful to you that are not included in "The 50 States of the United States" and hope you will let us know about online resources you especially appreciate.

It is suggested that you check the sites before bookmarking and having your students visit them. Some may not be the correct reading or content level for your students and some may include links to places that wouldn't be included in your lessons. For example, while surveying the sites, we found links to nightlife, signing up for tours, subscribing to magazines, advertisements, and descriptions of dramatic events that are better suited for adults. Some of the pages advertising maps and photos to order, however, have free resources you can use.
