The 50 States of the United States

Web Sites & Descriptions

1. All of the States-Together . . .

For general information about the states, try these sites:

A Brief Guide to State Facts features mottoes, state flags, state birds, state flowers, and more. You'll find links to state capitals and often to other state-related information. Find the Delaware Blue Hen, Kentucky Goldenrod, North Carolina's State Song, Louisiana's brown pelicans and magnolia trees-just to get you started. (Grade Levels: Grades 2 or 3 up)

For a well-organized chart featuring state links, state capitals, largest cities, state bird, and state flower for each state, go to The Internet Public Library's Stately Knowledge Chart. The Internet Public Library site, you'll find, is a fine resource for an abundance of information for your students. (Grade Levels: Grade 3 up)

At the site State Knowledge your students can pick any state or Washington, DC and find dates, charts, trivia, books and other resources, games about the Capitals and flags, and more. (Grade Levels: Grades 2 or 3 up)

You'll be sure to return to 50 states of the United States with its capital city data and information links. This is an excellent site with lots of easy-to-use information. (Grade Levels: Grades 3 up)

Media Shockwave of the States is a learning game featuring the state identification. (Grade Levels: Grade 4 up)

The State Flags Game and the State Capitals Game are places where your students can sharpen their knowledge of the states. (Grade Levels: Grades: 3 up)

City Net is a data base of information on cities. Your students can pick a state and then travel to its cities or pick a major city to explore. The site links contain data featuring weather, location, interesting places to visit, where to eat, historic spots, lodging. . . (Grade Levels: Grades 5 up)

Don't for the National Park Service with its links to recreational and historic parks throughout the 50 states. (Grade Levels: All)

If you're looking for maps and images to use with your classes, Color Landform Atlas of the United States is a good place to start. You'll find maps of the states and links to other state site information. Maps of the United States offers a variety of maps to select from; clicking on the maps will make them larger for your class discussions. You'll also want to check Landsat Images of the States, TruFlite - 50 Views of 50 States and Images of the States for a variety of interesting geography and science-related resources for your students. (Grade Levels: Grades 3 or 4 up)

You can do very interesting projects emphasizing State Birds with this Audubon Birds of America information. Also, for birds that live or visit states you are studying, but are not state birds, try Bird Highlights from Around the 50 States with its current information on habitats, decline in populations, wildlife refuges, etc. (Grade Levels: Grades K up for State Birds, nonreaders will need assistance; Grades 4 up for Highlights)

Every state has a state song, and you'll find them at State Songs. Sorry, but the site doesn't include audio files, at least not yet. Some states, by the way, have several state songs. (Grade Levels: Grade 2 up)

2. The States-50 in all . . .

There's an abundance of resources on the web about individual states. We've included links to the official state homepages and some other state-specific links that may be useful to you. If we haven't included your favorite site for your state, please let us know, and we'll try to add it to our list.

(Grade Levels: Most of these sites are appropriate for Grades 5 up or Grades 7-12. Some have children's sections for younger children, but all require children to be reading rather well. Teachers and parents may use the sites with younger children if they provide guidance in how to find and explore the information.)
