Interactive Sports Guides
Description: This lesson,
which includes the development of an interactive sports guide using presentation
software, would be appropriate for Physical Education, English, or technology
classes.
Subject: Physical Education
Grade Levels: 6-12
Materials & Equipment:
Video Camera, Digital or regular 35mm camera, sports equipment & rule
book (related to specific sport chosen), AV(optional) Macintosh Computer,
scanner, Digital Chisel Program by Pierian Springs.
Time Frame: few days to several
weeks (depending on how involved you want to become)
Major Objectives:
- To increase and demonstrate understanding of the rules
and instructions of a chosen sport.
- To use multimedia to create an interactive guide to a
school sport.
Prerequisites: A basic understanding
of how to use the Digital Chisel Program.
Procedures:
1. Have students individually or in groups choose a sport
which you will be covering in Physical Education classes or as an afterschool
sport throughout some point in the year.
2.Have students design a multimedia directory of the sport
which will include the following areas:
- rules
- regulations
- field or court diagram
- equipment and uniform descriptions
- a glossary of terms
- and demonstration of basic "plays"
and the following components:
- photos, animation, and video footage of plays
- referee calls
- equipment
- positions and movements of players
- Hypertext to "highlight" terms etc.
- Sound, and Buttons to navigate throughout the program.
3. Students will gather all pertinent information pertaining
to the rules and regulations of the sport as gleaned from rule books, talking
to coaches, referees, and preferably from their own experience with the
sport.
4. Students will be allotted time to gather photos, sounds,
and videos that may be used to support their program.
5. A storyboard will be constructed outlining each screen,
including a title screen, a menu screen, and a credit screen at the end.
6. Student projects will be used for a reference tool
for parents and other students interested in learning more about different
sports. A menu screen/directory may be constructed to link all of the sports
programs together . Users may click on a button icon of the sport such
as a tennis racquet for tennis, a golf club for golf, etc., and be taken
to that program.
Suggestions for Parents: Families
with the equipment and resources needed for this project might work together
to create sports' guides. Some families, for example, have a particular
interest in one sport and may enjoy developing materials for home and school
use. Because sports are so highly motivating for many students, combining
academic skills needed to complete this project with enthusiasm for a sport
or sports is an excellent idea.
Extensions: Guides on sportsmanship
for athletes and for those who attend the games might also be a valuable
project. Students might, in addition, create mini-guides for younger students
so that they will enjoy learning some of the rules and etiquette of various
sports.
