Handouts for Parents

"Reading" Suggestions for Parents of Young Children

  • Read aloud to your children. Be very enthusiastic about the books you read.

  • Encourage your children to read to you. Even if they are unable to read the book, let them tell the story in their own words. Have them pick out words they can read.

  • Let them know that you think reading is wonderful.

  • Take them to libraries and book stores.

  • Be a good "reading" example for them.

  • Encourage them to have a reading time during each day.

  • Let them know that you expect them to do leisure reading in addition to reading required by the school.

  • Read parts of easy books to them and leave books for them to pick up and read on their own.

  • Show them books that are in series to encourage them to read a sequence of books.

  • Encourage them to read many books over the summer.

  • Ask your children to share with you books from the school library.

  • If you have a computer with a CD-ROM player, use CD-ROM stories to help them enjoy reading and propel them to reading books.

  • Make sure they are "reading" books they get from the library and book stores. Some will love to pick out books, but won't read them unless encouraged.

  • Involve grandparents, baby-sitters, siblings and others in your work toward reading success.

  • Keep in mind, especially when they get into Grades 3 up, that you may need to require reading. Encouragement and motivation are still the best path, but if your children aren't reading for pleasure, you'll need to step in and change the pattern.

  • Make reading an important part/essential part of your children's daily lives.

  • Help your children understand that their "job" is to be a student.
