Narrator
Narrator:
Billy and his mother and father are on the way to the first day of school.
Billy isn't sure he wants to go to school.
Mrs. Heagy:
This is your big day, Billy.
Mr. Heagy:
I'll bet they have computers in your classroom. You'll love that!
Billy:
I think I'd rather play at home on my computer.
Mr. Heagy:
But at school there will be lots of boys and girls to play with you.
Billy:
I don't know any of them.
Mrs. Heagy:
You'll know them after today. I'm sure you'll find some good friends.
Mr. Heagy:
Here we are at school. Your mom and I will go in with you today to say
hello to your teacher, Mrs. Loving. I know you remember her from the open
house. She was so nice.
Narrator:
Billy's parents and Billy walk into the school and go down the hall
to the classroom. The teachers in the halls all smile and welcome them
to the school. As they get near Billy's classroom, Mrs. Loving spots Billy
and gives him a wide smile.
Mrs. Loving: (to Billy)
Hello Billy, it's so good to see you again. Come on in. It's going to
be a terrific day!
(to Billy's parents)
Come in and see all our exciting classroom and meet some of the other
children. And here's your very own desk and chair!
Narrator:
Billy's parents look around the classroom at all the activities and
bulletin boards. Then they give Billy a big hug.
Mrs. Heagy:
I'll meet you after school where we came in. You know what we planned.
Mr. Heagy:
Learn lots. See you tonight.
Billy:
Bye.
Narrator:
Mrs. Loving notices that Billy's parents are leaving and invites him
to look at all the books on the class bookshelf.
Mrs. Loving:
Billy, won't you come over here and tell us what your favorite book
is? This is Sandra Jane.
Sandra Jane:
I like books. Do you?
Billy:
Yes. I can read some.
Thomas: (to the teacher)
The computer just stopped. Please come and fix it.
Sandra Jane:
That Thomas doesn't know how to use the computer, do you? I ask lots
of questions my mother says. Do you think I ask too many?
Billy:
No. My mother and father say I'm a computer expert. I'll go help.
Thomas: (to the teacher who is busy welcoming children and parents to
the classroom)
It still isn't working!
Mrs. Loving:
I'll be there in a minute.
Narrator: Billy walks over to Thomas and stands next to him.
Thomas:
Do you know how to make it work? I move the mouse and nothing happens.
Billy:
I always say you start by pushing in all the connections. Looks to me
like the mouse cord connector is coming out of the keyboard. Let's push
it in.
Thomas:
Wow! It works now. You are a computer expert.
Billy:
That's what my mom and dad say.
Mrs. Loving:
Billy, from now on you will be the person in charge of the computers.
If anyone has trouble, it's your job to help them. Will you do that for
me?
Billy:
Yes. That would be fun.
Thomas:
We are going to be good friends. Did you see that big Oscar the Fish?
Let's draw him on the computer. How do we get to the drawing part?
Sandra Jane:
Billy is really smart. How smart is he? I wonder if he knows how many
words are in all these books?
Narrator:
Billy has a great day at school working on the computer, practicing
his writing, figuring out some hard math problems, reading stories, and
playing on the playground with his new friends.
Mrs. Loving:
It's time to leave for today. Let's pack up. I'll see you tomorrow.
What a wonderful class you are!
The class:
We don't want to leave!
Narrator: Mrs. Heagy meets Billy as he runs to her after school.
Mrs. Heagy:
Tell me all about your fabulous first day.
Billy:
I am the computer teacher, and I love Mrs. Loving. She's so nice and
I have lots of good friends. One is a fish. Here's the printout of Oscar.
Activities
If you have time, try some of these activities:
- Put on the play with your friends.
- Make up a play about your first day at school.
- Make a list of all the wonderful things you do at school. Read the
list to your parents. Show the list to your teacher. Your teacher will
really, really like it.
- Draw pictures on your home computer of your friends in school.
- Make a slide show about Oscar that you can take to school and show
to your friends.
- Why do you think the children like Mrs. Loving so much? Draw a picture
of what you think she looks like. On the picture, write what you think
she would say to you if you met her.
