The Children's Playground

Hi kids! It's your old seadog, Milo! Join me as I sail the Internet to find exciting and interesting things about Boats That Float!

Here's your life preserver! Remember that whenever you go on the water in a boat that floats, you must wear a life preserver. I've got my own special dog preserver that I always wear! Being smart on the water means being safe!

Did you know that many, many years ago, people thought that the ocean had a king named Neptune who ruled over all of the creatures in the sea?

Here's a picture of Neptune with his trident (no, not the gum!)

Ancient sea mariners were absolutely, positively convinced that there were monsters who lived in the sea! Even today, if you travel to Scotland, you'll find people who believe that the Loch Ness Monster is waiting in the depths to jump out and surprise sailors!
This is a picture of a boat called a Longship or, as the Vikings who sailed in it called it, a Dragonboat. They used a small sail and lots of oars to make it go very, very fast. The Vikings used one to go all the way across the Atlantic to Newfoundland!

Did you know that this year is the 500th anniversary of John Cabot's voyage to the New World? That's what they called North America back then. Cabot sailed in his ship called The Mathew and modern sailors built a new Mathew just like the old one and sailed it across the ocean this summer.

Sometimes boats don't float. The most famous one is called the Titanic and it went down after hitting an iceberg!
Do you know the song..."Sailing, sailing, over the ocean blue?" Sailing is still one of the most popular sports in the world and there are hundreds of different kinds of boats that float. If you'd like to find out about different boats, click here!
Sometimes boats float under the water! We take "sub" which means "below" and "marine" which means "sea" and we put them together to get "submarine". If you'd like to learn more about them, click here.
Mathieu (7), Nicolas (9), and Lucas (4) are the Laffitte brothers and they're sailing around the Pacific Ocean with their parents for two whole years! You can check on their progress at their website and even send e-mail to them!
Thanks for joining me! It's amazing how much information you can find on the Internet about boats! My favourite website is called Global Online Adventure Learning and they invite you and me to go on virtual sailing trips with them. Try it! Bark! Woof!
